Canada’s parliamentary restaurant will be serving seal meat on Wednesday in a gesture of defiance aimed at a European Union ban on imports of seal products.

Canada’s Conservative government says it will fight the EU ban, which was imposed last July on the grounds that the annual seal hunt off the east coast was cruel and inhumane.

A dish of double-smoked bacon-wrapped seal loin in a port reduction will be on the menu on Wednesday, the office of Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette said on Monday.

“All political parties will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the international community the solidarity of the Canadian Parliament behind those who earn a living from the seal hunt,” she said in a statement.

Ottawa says the hunt — which takes place in March and April — provides valuable income for Atlantic fishing communities. The seals are either shot or hit over the head with a spiked club called a hakapik.

An aide to Hervieux-Payette said that, depending on supplies, seal meat could be available once a week when in season.

A bilingual fourth-grader hurt in an Arizona bus accident that killed six people and injured more than a dozen others translated from an ambulance stretcher for busy rescue workers as they hurried to set up a triage center, authorities said Saturday.

Oscar Rodriguez of Las Vegas was labeled a hero by firefighters and paramedics for helping them communicate with non-English-speaking passengers on the Los Angeles-bound bus just after Friday’s predawn crash on Interstate 10 south of Phoenix.

They presented him with gifts and a certificate that reads “Hero of the day” during a visit with him at a Phoenix hospital Saturday. More than a dozen others remained hospitalized Saturday, including the bus driver.

“This kid stayed calm and was brave more than any other veteran I’ve worked with,” said paramedic Kenneth Leslie.

The bus was traveling from the central Mexican state of Zacatecas to L.A.

The idea of being monolingual, especially in this day and age, and especially being resistant to foreign languages for fear of losing your culture or having to think or whatever, is so trite and so removed from reality it makes me sick. I want to see this story on every channel, because people need to hear it. People of America: get over yourselves. If things from foreign countries scare and confuse you, you should be prepared to live in fear for the rest of your life.

The Comedians of Comedy, dir. Michael Blieden, 2005

This is what I watched before bed last night. It’s not just a stand-up comedy film but, I think, an illustration of how comedy has changed as an art form as the audience comes to expect the same sort of genuineness from the comedian as they would expect from a musician or writer. When the Comedians of Comedy talk on comedy itself, it’s an enlightening look on the act of creating. Not to mention it’s fucking hilarious and dark as hell, especially when Zach Galifianakis muses to the camera about how everyone, himself included, must have something seriously wrong with them.

Holy shit, does Zach dress well in this movie. I’m going to hit up the Salvation Army later because his style is dope as hell.

My Favourite Darling Girl - Chris Westaway (Daniel Johnston...

My Favourite Darling Girl - Chris Westaway (Daniel Johnston cover)

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — They never touched the floor — that would have set off an alarm.

They didn’t appear on store security cameras. They cut a hole in the roof and came in at a spot where the cameras were obscured by advertising banners.

And they left with some $26,000 in laptop computers, departing the same way they came in — down a 3-inch gas pipe that runs from the roof to the ground outside the store.

Police believe that’s how some brazen bandits managed to swipe 20 Apple notebooks early this morning at a Best Buy on Route 1 in South Brunswick without detection.

“High level of sophistication,” said Detective James Ryan, a police department spokesman. “They never set off any motion sensors. They never touched the floor. They rappelled in and rappelled out.”

Employees discovered the missing laptops, as well as a gaping hole in the ceiling, when they arrived to work around 6:30 this morning.

The thieves left boot prints on the gas pipe, which runs up the side of the building in Monmouth Junction, Ryan said.

On top of the building, they used a saw to cut through several inches of rubber and insulation, then sliced a 3-foot-wide square in the metal roof, he said.

Once inside, the burglars dropped 16 feet to 10-foot-tall racks — avoiding contact with the floor, where motion sensors would have set off an alarm. They snatched the notebooks from the racks, then went back out through the roof.

The effort was daring and unusual, said John Harris, an expert in security who has consulted on thousands of burglaries.

“I would say they were a professional crew,” said Harris, who is based in Atlanta, Ga., but does work throughout the nation. “At least I’ve never dealt with anything like this. From time to time, people break in, but not usually through the roof.”

It’s a first for South Brunswick police and Detective Ryan, who said he’s seen similar burglaries but never anything that required this much effort. The thieves knew the layout of the store and apparently knew the banners would block the view of security cameras, he said.

“The tools they had to bring, the alarms they had to circumvent — it certainly required a lot of high-level planning,” Ryan said.

Police think it may not be an isolated incident, and that the crew — which had to include at least 2 or 3 people — might have hit other locations before. The investigating officer, Detective John Penney, will share his notes with other law enforcement agencies around New Jersey.

The corporate offices of Best Buy declined to comment.

Police in Seoul have arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly stole laptop computers and other valuables mostly from the houses of foreign residents.

The man, identified only by his surname Baek, is alleged to have stolen valuables and money — worth about 15 million won ($13,000) — since November last year, officials at Yongsan Police Station said.

On Feb. 23, Baek entered a house of a 20-year-old student from the United Sates and stole a laptop computer worth 2 million won and 100,000 won in cash, according to the police.

Noting that laptop computers foreigners brought into Korea are more difficult to trace, as organizations do not have records of their product identification numbers, Baek has stolen a total of 10 laptops.

Of the total 10 victims, eight were foreigners, including an elementary school English teacher and a student studying Korean at a local university. No embassy employees or foreign diplomats were among the victims, police said.

“When walking past a foreigner’s house, there was a unique odor foreigners carry. That is how I fathomed out whether a foreigner lived in the house,” Baek was quoted as saying by police.
